ASUS ET2700 All-in-one PC To Be Released In Europe

ASUS has decided to release the ET2700 (ET2700INKS-B005C) 27-inch all-in-one PC in Europe next month. The computer features a Full HD (1920 x 1080) MVA display with an Intel Core i5-2400S processor, a 6 GB of RAM, a 2TB of 5400RPM hard disk drive, a 1GB nVidia GeForce GT 540M graphics card, a Blu-ray combo drive, a 3-in-1 card reader, a 2.0-megapixel webcam, a TV tuner and two 3.5W speakers. The ASUS ET2700 also provides several connectivity options such as Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, a pair of USB 3.0 ports, D-Sub and HDMI. There is also an external sub-woofer, a wireless keyboard, a wireless mouse and a remote control in the package. The ASUS ET2700 runs on the Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit OS. Acer will release the Iconia Tab A510 in Europe this April with a price tag of €500 or around $647. Available in a 16GB, a 32GB or a 64GB of internal storage, the tablet features a 1.3GHz quad-core Tegra 3 processor, a 1GB of RAM, a 10.1-inch display with a 1280 x 800 pixel resolution, a microSD card slot, a mini-USB port and a mini-HDMI port. Inilah genre laptop paling “hot” tahun ini. Yang menjadi senjata bagi pabrikan PC untuk bertahan dari gempuran tablet. Pada intinya, ultrabook adalah notebook yang dipangkas ukurannya, ditambah daya tahan baterainya, serta makin canggih performanya. Nah, berikut adalah deretan ultrabook yang mencuri perhatian di CES 2012:

Dell XPS 13
Berukuran 13 inci, Dell XPS 13 terbuat dari cangkang alumunium yang sangat ringan. Bidang paling tebalnya hanya 13 mm. Sedangkan beratnya kurang adri 1,4 kg. XPS 13 juga menggunakan kaca Gorilla Glass keluaran Corning yang seola menjadi standar dari smartphone, tablet, dan notebook saat ini. Dell berencana untuk memasarkan XPS 13 pada Februari mendatang.

Hewlett-Packard Envy 14 Spectre
HP Spectre memiliki desain bodi yang sangat elegan. Prosesornya menggunakan Intel Core i5-2467M, 4GB RAM, dan 128 GB SSD. Tak hanya itu, ultrabook ini juga dilengkapi teknologi Near Field Communication (NFC). Kibornya dilengkapi teknologi backlit radiance, yang akan mendeteksi kehadiran penggunanya. Nama Spectre dipilih untuk membangkitkan misteri. Baterai ultrabook ini bisa bertahan 9 jam. Rencananya akan dipasarkan dengan harga USD1.400 pada Februari mendatang.

Series 9 Samsung
Ultrabook Series 9 Samsung ini memang mengejutkan. Bagian paling tebalnya hanya 14,9 mm. Sedangkan beratya cuma 1,59 kilogram. Padahal, layarnya berukuran 15 inci. Untuk seri 13 inci, ketebalannya dipangkas lagi jadi 12,9 mm dan berat 1,15 kg. Kedua model itu mengadopsi Intel Core i5, RAM 8 GB, dan kapasitas penyimpanan SSD 256 GB. Series 9 dapat dibangunkan dari sleep mode dalam 1,4 detik, dengan baterai mampu bertahan sampai 10 jam. Kabarnya, model ini juga akan meluncur pada Februari mendatang.

Acer Aspire S5S5 memiliki fitur jauh lebih baik dibandingkan S3. Layarnya berukuran 13,3 inci, sama dengan pendahulunya. Yang berbeda adalah ketebalannya yang mencapai 15 mm pada bagian tertipis. Sementara beratnya hanya 1,35 kg. Ultrabook ini juga menggunakan Intel Core i5 dan i7 dengan prosesor terbaru Ivy Bridge. Perbedaan lain dari S5 adalah port Thunderbolt untuk transfer data lebih cepat, serta USB 3.0 dan HDMI. Kapasitas simpannya sendiri sudah menggunakan SSD.

LG Z330Z330 berukuran 13,3 inci. Fiturnya, antara lain prosesor Intel Core i7, serta layar beresolusi 1366×768 piksel. Ketebalannya ada dua, yakni 14.7 mm dan 19.9 mm. Sedangkan beratnya 1212 gram dan 1497 gram. Untuk kapasitas penyimpanan, pengguna bisa memilih 120 GB SSD atau 256 SSD pada Z330. (tyo)

T-Mobile Expands 4G Network and Device Portfolio

At CES2012 T-Mobile outlined plans to continue expansion on "America's Largest 4G Network" along with new devices, rate plans and services. They spoke of two new devices, the first(the 2nd we don't care about *cough* WP7 *cough*) is the announcement of a new Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G.

I have no idea where they come up with these names, but it looks nice on the spec sheet. A Qualcomm S3 dual-core CPU clocked at 1.5ghz which i guess, makes this thing BLAZE-ingly fast? It must be enough as T-Mobile claims it to be one of their fastest 4G smartphones using their HSPA+ network which tops out at 42mbps. Rather than give us an ETA, they claim it will be released "later this year." There is a quote involving Sherlock that comes to mind...

While the discussion was focused on "America's Largest 4G Network", they also spoke about a few other things like a new "Bobsled Messaging" service which is now available on the Android Market. Read more below

·         Results of T-Mobile’s Consumer Survey: Recently, T-Mobile conducted an Omnibus survey with Harris Interactive that confirms 4G connections and affordability are key features consumers are looking for when they shop for mobile devices. Sony Smartwatch to be Launched in Conjunction with Xperia S

It seems that smart watches are a bit of a theme at this year's CES. Motorola debuted an MP3-focused smart watch (though not Android based), and earlier today we told you about the I'm Watch. As an upgrade to the LiveView that they released last year, Sony revealed the SmartWatch (which begs the question of what we're supposed to call other smart watches). The SmartWatch sports a 1.3-inch color OLED touchscreen that displays information from your phone when the two are paired together.
Users can see texts, tweets, Facebook posts, and even control music, all from the comfort of their wrist. What's better is that due to the Android OS, enhancement apps can be downloaded via the Market to spruce up the experience. The SmartWatch should be coming out in Q1 of this year with a price tag of £100 (about $153).

Available in a slate black and silver finish, the gadget features a 7-inch multitouch LCD display with a 1.2GHz Qualcomm dual core processor, a 5-megapixel digital camera, a-GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, a 3G+ connection and the Google Android 3.2 Honeycomb OS. Qualcomm announced at CES that their new line of Snapdragon processors are powering the Smart TVs at CES, and they're bringing in to full web browsing and access to the latest Android apps, as well as console class gaming.
“Consumers demand a seamless experience across all screens, including smartphones, tablets, PCs and televisions,” said Raj Talluri, vice president of product management for Qualcomm. “Having Snapdragon processors power smart TVs and digital media adapters is a natural extension of our leadership in mobile and computing technologies into the connected home.”

Pantech launches waterproof LTE tablet for AT&T

The device above is the Pantech Element, a waterproof LTE tablet for AT&T. It's packing an 8-inch 1024 x 768 display, 1.5GHz dual-core processor, Honeycomb, and of course LTE connectivity. The Element will run users about $299 with a new two-year contract. AT&T shows off the device in the video below.

The newest addition to the Galaxy tablet line up was announced today at CES. The 7.7 inch 4G LTE-Enabled Samsung Galaxy Tab will be available in the coming weeks. It's the first tablet in the United States to feature a Super AMOLED^™ Plus Display. As mentioned above, it is the world's thinnest 4G LTE tablet weighing only 340 grams (roughly 12 oz) and measuring at only 7.9 millimeters thin.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 has a 1.4GHZ dual-core processor with 16 GB of on board storage. It also features Peel Smart Remote that allows customers to find and watch their favorite TV shows. Tab 7.7 owners can also control their home entertainment system using Peel Smart Remote, regardless of manufacturer and all with just a tap of a finger.

Huawei to announce 2 new smartphones, one being world’s thinnest

CES has begun, and it's time for the announcements to start flying in. In the latest from the madhouse, Huawei has announced two new phones: the Ascend P1 S and the Ascend P1. The unveiling will be happening at 8 AM PST. The Ascend P1S will be coming in at just 6.68 mm thin, making it the world's (currently) thinnest smartphone. The P1 will have all the same specs, but will come in a bit thicker, and will most likely be for LTE markets. Specs include:

Breaking: Google to manufacture their own processor for Android devices?

Here's something we haven't heard about. Apparently, the geniuses at Google are working on a Google-branded processor and GPU, perhaps to create some unity in Android devices. Rumor has it that this processor will be shown off in the next Nexus device. While this is sudden, it does make a lot of sense from Google's perspective. They want to be able to truly rival other devices (like the iPhone) by creating their own line of processors, instead of having every Android device use a different brand. The term "processor fragmentation" doesn't exactly describe it, but you get the idea.
Of course, this is all speculation until we hear from Google, who hasn't responded to any questions. More on this as it develops.

Lenovo impresses at CES with Android

The magic that is CES is starting a bit early, thanks to Lenovo. They've unveiled several new Android devices, and each is just as impressive as the next.

Let's start with what everyone wants to see: tablets. Lenovo announced the IdeaTab S2 10, which is packing a 10-inch display, a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 8960, Ice Cream Sandwich, 20 hours of battery life, and a custom UI that Lenovo is dubbing "Mondrian". The IdeaTab will also come with a keyboard dock, much like the Asus Transformer and Transformer Prime.

Next we have the Lenovo S2, an Android smartphone that's fairly impressive. It's bringing Gingerbread, a Snapdragon processor (we're assuming it's the same as that found in the IdeaTab), and an 8MP rear camera to the table.

Finally, Lenovo is stepping into the TV ring, with the K91. The K91 is the first TV to run Ice Cream Sandwich. It's packing a dual-core Snapdragon 8060 processor, and a "Sandwich" UI that brings together video on demand, traditional TV programs, and internet applications. The TV itself boasts an HD 3D display at 240Hz, with TruSurround. It's also rocking the Android Market and Lenovo's own app store. There's also a 5MP built-in webcam, so you can video chat with your buddies, and finally, Cloud support.

That's a lot to take in at once, but these devices are only available in China for the time being. Lenovo has promised to release them all in more countries around the world "at a later date".

With CES so close, Google has announced they are looking to add a star-studded line up of TV partners that'll feature Google-powered technology. Here's a taste:

LG – "We’re thrilled to welcome global consumer electronics leader LG to the Google TV family. LG will showcase a new line of TVs powered by Google TV running on their own L9 chipset at CES."
Marvell – "Also new to the Google TV family this year is Marvell, an innovative worldwide leader in chipsets. Marvell will be showcasing a new generation of Google TV solutions which will help bring more products across more price points to consumers."
MediaTek – "We’re also excited to partner with MediaTek, the leading Taiwanese chipset designer. MediaTek chipsets will power yet another wave of Google TV devices."
Samsung – "We’re excited to work closely with Samsung to bring Google-TV powered Samsung devices to market in 2012."
Sony – "We’re happy to build on our partnership with Sony. At CES, Sony will unveil new devices for the US and plans to offer Google TV powered products in several countries around the world in 2012."
Vizio – "Last year we announced our partnership with Vizio at CES. This year we’re excited to join Vizio as they hold private demos at CES showcasing their new line of Google TV-powered products."

SanDisk Memory Zone nice way to keep track of all your media everywhere

SanDisk's free Memory Zone app has caught the attention of data conscious people - like myself. The app is very easy to use, scans, indexes and backs up virtually all your media stored both locally and in the cloud. Offering to scan internal and removable SD cards, Dropbox, SugarSync, Google Docs, Facebook, Picasa and Box, you can set automatic backups and you even have the option to password protect your private files. Facebook integration also allows you to upload files from other mediums to Facebook.
I'm loving the look and color coding of the different indexes and convenient UI, the only complaint I have is, if you have a lot of similar, non specific file names for pictures, the lack of thumbnails makes it difficult to pick specific files. Videos do have thumbnails, but aren't always correct, as your can see with the duplicate in the screenshots after the break. But for a free app, this thing is total gold, and should be exiting beta status this Monday with a rating of over 4.5 stars and over 350 thousand downloads.

In the hubbub of price reductions, fire sales, sub $200 tablets masquerading as E-Readers, $100 dollar Chinese knockoffs, and other various developments making us go tablet crazy, I must say that this is something that, while it would be quite easy to overlook, it stands out from the rest after a second glance.

Acer will, in January, be adding the Iconia A200 to the already popular Iconia clan. Let's get to the best bits first: it boasts a full 10.1-inch HD display with a 1280 x 800 resolution, Honeycomb (with the promise of an ICS update shortly after launch), a 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 processor, a 2MP front-facing camera, 8 hours of battery life, a MicroSD card slot, and the full-sized USB port found on the other members of the Iconia family. I can't tell you how mind-bogglingly useful having a USB port on a tablet is.

The A200 will also be shipped with a bit of Acer bloatware, namely Acer Clear Fi (their own media sharing software) and something called Acer Ring, which is meant to help users get used to their apps.

LG’s New Google TV to Be Announced at CES 2012

It's a rather unarguable fact that, when Google TV launched at the end of 2010, it didn't quite make the impression that Google had intended. Indeed, a lot of reviewers wrote the initial product off as half-baked, which was somewhat true; this was their first outing, after all. And while the Google TV product line has picked up a bit of steam (and positive media exposure) as of late - particularly after its huge software update, it still hasn't quite "made" it. Well, LG is hoping to help push the service into the "successful" region with its new Google TV television, set to be announced at this coming CES. Beyond the obvious Google TV software on board, LG's new set is going to be rocking 3D (courtesy of the non-battery passive technology glasses tech, rather than the heavy battery-bearing active glasses type), which will probably please a few people. Pantech to release sub $300 waterproof Pantech Tablet next week

Some exciting news for AT&T customers that we can't wait to get our hands on as well. We've just learned from BGR about the announcement of the Pantech Element, which should be released on January 8th at $299.99 with a 2 year LTE data contract, or $449.99 without a contract. As far as specs, they're anything but standard. The Element packs an 8-inch screen, a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, Honeycomb (much to our dismay, the tablet won't be rocking the latest and greatest Android version), and 16 GB of internal storage.The 5MP rear camera can reportedly record 1080p HD video, and the 2MP front camera brags about its ability to Skype in 720p.

The thing that seems really attractive at this price is that fact that the tablet is rated IP57 on the waterproofing scale. This is pretty good if you keep the ports covered, but don't go scuba diving with the thing. More on this device as it comes in.

Velocity Micro, makers of the Cruz tablet line, is ready to pull the curtain back on a pair of new Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwiches at CES next week. The next generation of Cruz products keep with the tradition of respectable specifications and an affordable price point and come in 7-inch and 9.7-inch sizes. Although we don't know the price of the larger model, the smaller of the two will have an attractive $150 sticker.
Both feature the latest version of Android, offer consumers 1.2GHz processors, 8GB storage, front-facing cameras, and HDMI output. Asus launching 7-inch Eee Pad at CES?

Do you want an Asus tablet, but aren't too crazy about 10-inch form factors? You may soon have another option to consider, as the image of a new Android-powered Asus Eee Pad has emerged. The tablet reportedly packs a 7-inch display and what appears to be a set of dock connectors at the bottom of the device. That's all we know as far as specs are concerned, but we're confident that more information will find its way around the web sooner or later.

Asus sprang into the Android tablet world in 2011 with the Transformer and Transformer Prime, so it'll be interesting to see if they have as much luck in the 7-inch tablet market. We'll be sure to pass along more details on the small monster Asus is cooking up as they come in.

Digitimes: Google’s “Nexus Tablet” to be 7-inch, cost under $200

Word on the street today is that the rumored Nexus Tablet is in fact legit and it's aiming its cross-hairs at the Kindle Fire. Aiming as in should be in same size and price point that is. According to a recent Digitimes report, Google is working to release a 7-inch Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich tablet with a $200 sticker price. Details are naturally light at this point with even Google Taiwan acting as if they've never heard such rumors.
It's hard to imagine Google not wanting to set a benchmark tablet for developers much like they have with the Nexus line of phones. Then again, the landscape changes very quickly and there seems to be an arms race between multiple chipmakers. Chances are good that no matter what this device features it will be trumped in no time at all. Keep an eye on the phones announced at CES and Mobile World Congress this year and compare those to the Galaxy Nexus. Now, amplify that a bit and you can imagine the tablet side.
Of course it could also be that Google just wants to put out a low-cost alternative to the Kindle Fire and that other tablet that people like to talk about. Don't worry about the specs so much but just release something that folks will have a hard time resisting.

2011 is about to say goodbye to all of us, but it turned out to be the best year for Android. Android enthusiasts are calling 2011 "The Year of Android", and no doubt it is; also, it was very bright for Samsung, and there's a proof for that as well. Samsung officially announced that they shipped more than 1 million Galaxy Note units in just 2 months. The Galaxy Note was launched by Samsung a month ago, which is actually a smartphone-tablet hybrid. The phone is available in several countries and it's going to hit US shores in 2012. Keeping Samsung previous sale records in mind, just in 5 months after the launch of the Galaxy S II, Samsung sold almost 10 million SGSII units, which is an unbelievable record.

Well, Dell was the first one to launch a smartphone/tablet hybrid, known as Streak 5, but Galaxy Note is far superior. Now, it seems that other mobile companies would be following Samsung's footsteps, because this trend is now becoming "cool". Who's waiting to grab the Galaxy Note here in US? Anyone? Record breaking activations for Android and iOS

Flurry Analytics tracks 100% of all new Android and iOS activations, and they've come up with some very interesting statistics:
From December 1st through the 20th Android and iOS activations averaged 1.5 million per day, but on Christmas day shot up by more than 4.5 times to 6.8 million, totalling in at over 140% over last year's record with 2.8 million activations on Christmas day. With this incredible rise in activations, of course, came an astounding, if not as impressive, skyrocket of app downloads which Flurry tells us averaged 108 million per day throughout the month leading up to Christmas 2011, and weighed in at 242 million downloads on Christmas day, more than 125% growth, and anticipates over 1 billion dowloads through New Year's Day, in keeping with the percentage of elevation for that period last year.

Meizu planning to launch quad-core MX in 2012?

According to Chinese blog Techorz, Meizu is readying a killer Android device for the new year. Not much is known, but the device, which is being referred to as the Meizu MX, is said to be packing a Samsung Exynos 4210 quad-core processor and Ice Cream Sandwich. This is reportedly coming straight from J. Wong, the CEO of Meizu. He claims that the device will be released in May 2012.
That's literally all we know at this point, and the device may never even see the light of day. Even if it does, it's likely that only users in China will be able to get their hands on it. We're just hoping that Meizu finds a way to fit a big battery into the device, so the processor doesn't completely destroy the device from the start. More on this as it develops.

Novo7 ICS tablet now available for pre-order

Earlier this month, we showed you the first Ice Cream Sandwich tablet to hit the market, the Novo7. The tablet was limited to China, but U.S. users could get it by paying an extra 60 bucks for shipping and handling. Now the tablet is available for pre-order from PandaWill and Merimobiles, for $119 and $109 respectively. It's a decent price, but keep in mind that the design of the tablet is slightly different from the one we saw.
Let's have a quick look at the specs of the tablet. It comes with a 7-inch, 800 x 480 display, 1Ghz processor, 512MB of RAM, microSD card slot, and surprisingly, it has no camera. However, PandaWill highlights that the tablet comes with the Android Market, so it would be good for people who love their applications. Surely, companies will introduce ICS tablets with better specs soon, but right now the Novo7 isn't a bad choice.
So, are you looking for a cheap tablet with decent specs? The Novo7 just might be the one for you. And at $120, how can you go wrong?

Is that the Samsung Galaxy S III?

We first heard rumors about Samsung's next powerhouse device, the Galaxy SIII, back in October, and it looks like Concept Phones got their hands on a leaked render of what they think is the GSIII. Apparently it was sent to them by a Russian reader, who stated that the phone appeared on Samsung’s official page on a Russian social network known as Vkontakte. It sounds a bit sketchy, and we're definitely not taking any of it to heart until we get some more facts.
The device itself is said to feature a quad-core Samsung Exynos 4412 1.5GHz processor, TouchWiz 5.0, ICS, a 5-inch HD Super AMOLED display with a 1280 x 720 resolution, 9mm thick body, a 12MP camera featuring both an LED flash and a Xenon flash, along with a 2 MP front facing camera for video chatting. Supposedly, the GSIII will come in 32 and 64 GB models, both with microSDXC support, a stylus like the Galaxy Note, USB 3.0 capabilities, and last but not least, 4G LTE. As if that wasn't questionable enough, the Russian tipper also indicated that the device will dual-boot, giving users the choice of Android or Samsung's BadaOS.
Now that we've gotten all the purported specs out of the way, we really have to question them. I'm all for a killer device, but something seems askew here. We'll just take this with a grain of salt until something else pops up. Perhaps Samsung will shock us all and confirm them at CES.

What smartphone should I get?

Many of my friends, when it's time for an upgrade, ask me "What smartphone should I get?"
My typical answer is, "What carrier do you have?" and we proceed to go online and look at that carrier's selection of Android devices. I pick out a few, depending on their needs and preferences, usually mid-range in price, some with a happy mix of the best hardware and the best price, and some that appeal to their needs and taste.
But what they're really asking is, "Tony, should I get an iPhone, or an Android?" When I picked out high-end phones for them, they thought "Android it is," and proceed to go out and buy the cheapest, or even free phone, and then blame me when it's not delivering them iPhone quality.
So I should preface by saying that if you want something that's going to compete with the iPhone's quality, you're going to have to pay a similar price. Android is an awesome OS, and works amazingly when you have good hardware behind it.
So please listen when when you hear Android fanboys like me raving about how awesome Android devices are, how much better they are than iPhones, how much more they can do, or any of those things that I'm sure you've heard us go on about at some point or another. Just know that we're not saying that you should go out and buy the cheapest phone just because there's a little green Android on the info plaque at the store. Android is a lot of awesome things, but it is not magic, and it will not transform a low-end piece of junk into something that can rival the quality of a $600 iPhone.
So when you ask what phone to get on Verizon, and I say, "Get yourself a Droid 3," that does not mean you should go look around at the store to see what is prettiest. You asked me for a reason, so please don't blame me when you are stuck with an LG Ally that can't even play Angry Birds without force closing you to death. If you're trying to decide between an iPhone and an Android, you need to look at Androids that are going to cost about the same amount as the iPhone. I promise, you'll be glad you did.

It's disgusting that people fall for this and never realize that if they don't pay premium costs, they will not end up with a premium handset. If you thought you couldn't get a real Android tablet from a brand you've heard of for less than $200, think again. Lenovo's just announced the IdeaPad Tablet A1, a 7-inch Android unit that we got a sneaky first glimpse of back in July. Now it's real, and it's cheap, it's running Gingerbread, and while it doesn't hold a candle to the Galaxy Tab 7.7, it honestly feels like something far above its price point. Read on for our impressions.

Lenovo IdeaPad Tablet A1 hands-on

There are plenty of cheap Android tablets out there, but most have sketchy construction and many are locked out of the Android Market -- meaning no Gmail app, no Maps, and none of the other built-in Google goodies. That's not the case with the A1, which is running Android 2.3 Gingerbread on a single-core Cortex A8 processor. It has front- and rear-facing cameras (the back one rated at three megapixels) and a 7-inch, 1,024 x 600 display.

Again, those are specs that don't compare to the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7, but something tells us you won't be able to score one of these for the $199 asking price that the A1 starts at. For that you'll get 8GB of storage, but a 16GB model will go for $249, 32GB for $299. We're told only the 16GB and 32GB models will be shipped to the US, which is a bit of a shame, as with both microSD and SD expansion it'll be fairly easy to add more. Connectivity is limited to WiFi, but there is a GPS in there, so it could make for a passable navigation device.

This certainly isn't the slimmest tablet on the market, but it's very comfortable to hold in the hand, and Lenovo says it has the same sort of magnesium alloy rollcage inside as used on ThinkPads, here adding durability and stiffness. Also, it's available in pink, and you don't see that every day on a tablet. We did find the blue a bit more fetching, but we won't think less of you if you opt for the more refined black or white options when this thing ships sometime later this year.

Update: In case you're wondering, yes, we asked if it would be upgraded to Honeycomb. We didn't get a straight answer, but it didn't seem particularly likely.

Lenovo Idea Pad prime contender against Amazon's Kindle Fire

Lenovo has begun taking orders for its IdeaPad A1 tablet, which we first saw in an assortment of candy coated colors back in September. The budget-friendly 7-inch Android 2.3 Gingerbread slate features mid-range specs and is priced starting at $199, right in line with the recently launched 7-inch tablet from Amazon called the Kindle Fire.

Although it lacks the fanfare and appeal of Amazon’s offering as well as the ecosystem of products and services, the Lenovo IdeaPad A1 has some hardware components that the Kindle Fire lacks—mainly cameras. The IdeaPad A1 features a 2-megapixel front-facing camera and a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera.
The tablet features a 7-inch LED display with 1024 x 600 resolution powered by a TI OMAP 3622 Cortex A8 1GHz single-core processor and has offline GPS and navigation. It measures 11.9mm thin and weighs about 400 grams. It also has Bluetooth, WiFi, micro SD, micro USB, and stereo speakers.
The $199 price is for the 2GB version in black, while the 16GB version in black, blue, white, or pink is priced at $249. Pre-orders start today with shipments starting October 27.

ZoomVarious reports have pointed out that Lenovo is now accepting pre-orders for its 7-inch Gingerbread tablet, the IdeaPad A1. The base "web" price for the 2 GB model is $199 USD, seemingly making it a prime contender against Amazon's Kindle Fire tablet although Lenovo's offering provides a smaller storage capacity.
As seen on the site, the tablet will sport a 1 GHz TI OMAP 3622 Cortex A8 single-core SoC, 512 MB of LPDDR2 memory at 600 MHz, a 7-inch LED Glare Multi-touch screen (1024 x 600), a front-facing 2MP camera, a rear-facing 5MP camera, and Android 2.3 "Gingerbread." Other features will include a 1-cell Li-Polymer battery, 802.11 b/g/n connectivity and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR.
For consumers hunting for a similarly-priced tablet, Amazon's Gingerbread-based Kindle Fire lacks in some areas but propels in others when up against Lenovo's IdeaPad A1. Amazon's tablet will feature a dual-core TI OMAP SoC clocked at 1 GHz, 512 MB of RAM, a 7-inch screen, an 8-hour battery and 8 GB of storage. The tablet won't offer cameras or Bluetooth, but it will have 802.11 b/g/n connectivity.
In addition to the 2 GB model, Lenovo is also offering the 16 GB model for $249 online, and will arrive in four separate colors: white, black, pink and blue -- the 2 GB will come only in black. Both models will be built using a magnesium alloy roll-cage internal frame design, and measure just 0.46-inches thick.
Lenovo expects to ship both tablets on October 28.

Microsoft confirms takeover of Skype

Microsoft has confirmed that it has agreed to buy internet phone service Skype.

The deal will see Microsoft pay $8.5bn (£5.2bn) for Skype, making it Microsoft's largest acquisition.
Luxembourg-based Skype has 663 million global users. In August last year it announced plans for a share flotation, but this was subsequently put on hold.
Internet auction house eBay bought Skype for $2.6bn in 2006, before selling 70% of it in 2009 for $2bn.
This majority stake was bought by a group of investors led by private equity firms Silver Lake and Andreessen Horowit.
Other major shareholders include tech-firm Joltid and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board.
Shares in Microsoft ended the day in New York down 0.5% at $25.68. In contrast, eBay - which owns a stake in Skype - saw its share price rally 2.5%.
'Defensive move' Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer said: "Skype is a phenomenal service that is loved by millions of people around the world.

It's a done deal: Microsoft has bought Skype for a whopping $8.5bn.
That's a lot of cash for an eight-year-old company that's not making a lot of money.
So what's in it for Microsoft?
For starters, the firm gets well over 600 million users who make Skype the world's largest phone company for international voice calls.
More importantly, Microsoft buys into a lot of potential.
Marry Skype's software with the Xbox Kinect and an HD television set, and Microsoft can make a powerful argument for getting into millions of living rooms.
Think beyond teleconferencing for the whole family: there's one-on-one training, home schooling, even patient care delivered remotely and in vision.
Smarten it up for the corporate world, and Microsoft can challenge the telepresence business of firms like Cisco and Polycom.
And Skype is multi-platform, reaching into the worlds of Apple and Linux.
Finally, Skype is mobile, and can be paired with Windows Phone 7.
The hitch: Microsoft boss Steve Ballmer will have to work hard to integrate Skype, to ensure the voice/video-over-the-internet company is not strangled by his firm's notorious bureaucracy.

"Together we will create the future of real-time communications so people can easily stay connected to family, friends, clients and colleagues anywhere in the world."

Skype will now become a new division within Microsoft, and Skype chief executive Tony Bates will continue to lead the business, reporting directly to Mr Ballmer.
"It's a strategic asset and a defensive move [for Microsoft]," said Colin Gillis, an analyst at BGC Financial.
"If they can put it on Windows 8, it gives them an advantage. It helps them in the tablet market."
Other analysts say Microsoft's aim in buying Skype is to improve its video conferencing services.
Price concerns Although the price tag of $8.5bn will not stretch the US giant, some experts have questioned whether it is paying too much for a company that has struggled to turn a profit.
Michael Clendenin, managing director of consulting firm RedTech Advisors, said: "If you consider [Skype] was just valued at about $2.5bn 18 months ago when a chunk was sold off, then $8.5bn seems generous.
"[It] means Microsoft has a high wall to climb to prove to investors that Skype is a necessary linchpin for the company's online and mobile strategy."
This view was echoed by Ben Woods, head of research group CCS Insight.
"The big unanswered question is how do Skype assets work for Microsoft... how do you justify the price?" he said.
Skype was founded in 2003.
Calls to other Skype users are free, while the company charges for those made to both traditional landline phones and mobiles.

HTC has bumped up the speed of their ChaCha "Facebook Phone" up to 800MHz ahead of its eventual US debut. Announced back in February at Mobile World Congress, the unique handset was initially listed with a 600MHz processor. While Android enthusiasts and high end users might turn their nose at an 800MHz processor, we can't imagine the typical demographic even caring. As much as it might pain you to admit it, not everyone needs a dual-core beast.
The ChaCha is expected to come to the United States as part of an exclusive deal with AT&T. The exact date and pricing has yet to be determined.

The Toshiba Thrive is just 6 days away from its June 13th release, so we though we would go over some of the specs and features, just to jog your memory. The Thrive is packing a 2.1GHz Tegra 2 dual core processor, with 1GB of RAM, Android 3.1, a 10.1-inch display with 1280x800 resolution, up to 32GB of on-board storage, an SD card slot, 2MP front-facing camera, 5MP rear camera with autofocus and digital zoom, a USB 2.0 port, along with a MiniUSB and HDMI ports, and a powerful user-replaceable lithium ion battery.

Now that I've taken a breath, if something in that mass of specs doesn't impress you, I don't know what will.
